As part of my word of the year, complete, I’ve decided to share my weekly progress. I’ve got a big ol list of goals (100, to be exact) and a couple of them are pretty lofty. If I’ve learned anything from my favourite goal masters it’s that you have to break things down into little bite sized chunks and eat them up one at a time.  Here’s to getting shit done!

This week was crazy. There was so much drinking and maybe a little Maccas and a million and a half goodbyes to my same best friend. Zana and I came to Australia together nearly 2 years ago, and even when we’ve been on different sides of the country it’s still been comforting to know I’ve got a friend. She has now moved back to Canada to continue her adventures in Banff (with our other great friend Chelsea), but this week was all about celebration and “lasts.” We actually ended up going on a super last minute (like decided and on the road at 2AM last minute) road trip to Sydney to send her off at the airport. It was tons of fun! I’m super jealous she gets to go home and be around familiar things, I’m in love with Australia but I’ve been super homesick lately. I’m still falling behind on achieving my goals, but this morning I sat down to focus and really take the time to figure out how I’m going to accomplish everything I want to do. Baby steps, right?

*I actually don’t know this week because the silly scale is out of batteries!

Top 4 Speeches at the Golden Globes

Award shows make me cry. I don’t normally watch them because the highlights online are just as good, but this time around I decided to give it a go. I laughed, I cried (a couple of times… I know, I’m a baby) I was jealous of the pretty dresses and thought maybe I should do something with my life to get a fancy award on my shelves. These 4 acceptance speeches were ones that were truly inspiring, heat warming, and will just generally put a smile on your dial. Also Tina and Amy make everything amazing.

4. Common

Common and John Legend won the Golden Globe for best original song from the movie Selma. Referencing inequality and the recent tragedies all over the world, Common puts how we’ve all been feeling so eloquently. We all are the hopeful black woman. We all are the caring white supporter.

3. Maggie Gyllenhaal

Maggie Gyllenhall won her Golden Globe for her character in The Honorable Woman. She talks about women, powerful women, beautiful women, complicated women. She made me feel proud to be a woman, like even with my idiosyncrasies I was doing something right.

2. Jeffery Tambor

Winning for his role in Transparent, Jeffery Tambor gives a huge shout out to the transgender community and is doing his part to try and change the world. He thanked the usual suspects, but he also talked really open and honestly about how doing the series has changed his life and even dedicated the award to the transgender community. I love to see people taking an issue that’s hard to tackle and breaking it down into bite sized manageable pieces.

1. George Clooney

Well and truly the man on the night, Mr. Clooney dazzled us with his smile and then charmed us with his beautiful words. He reminded the star studded audience that they have not failed, that their accomplishments shine, also reminding the rest of us that celebrities are humans too. He paid tribute to his new wife, the beautiful and talented woman who make his face light up and his words less composed. Congrats on the lifetime achievements, George!

Honorable mention moments:

Motivation Monday

Happy Monday everyone!

I hope your day is filled with sunshine and lollipops and unicorns. I’m smiling, but last night this girl stepped on a toothpick and it was lodged deep into the soft fleshy part of my foot. (Maybe not deep, but like a cm or so) Immediately I screamed, ripped out the tiny wooden dagger (et tu, toothpick?) and the tears were hot and fast. The boyfriend laughed at my pain, the lack of blood, and the teeny tiny hole in my foot, then brought me an ice pack. Now I’m hobbling around with a purple swelling probably infected hole that hurts so much when I step. Lame. Hope you’re looking forward to the week as much as I am, and if not, here are a some espresso shots of inspiration!

  • How to grow up and finally become the morning person you’ve always dreamed of being.
  • Bling on a budget, DIY diamonds for every area of your life.
  • Becky Higgins (project life goddess) has released new core kits. Yay!
  • Meryl Streep proving beauty is timeless. Also, that dress!
  • Want to get your nostalgic groove on? Check out this childhood memory maker. Brb, listening to 1999.
  • And while we’re talking music, check out two faves in one – Milky Chance covering Taylor Swift!

Snip Snip

2015 is all about change. I’m still on the New Years kick, I love the feeling of brand new And one of the things that this girl wants to change is her tresses. I’ve currently got not so lovely not so long locks. I want to chop it all off although I’m sure I’ll regret it immediately. I want to do something crazy, like some of these ladies!

1. Bossy Platinum Blonde

2. Sassy Black and Teal

3. Cotton Candy Pink and White

4. Fuck Me Purple

5. Pincess Rainbow Pastel

I’m thinking short, sweet, and platinum blonde so I can switch it up and join in the pastel party! It’d be an absolutely massive change, but I’m super keen to do something crazy! #YOLO, right?

A Week In Instagram

I’ve used this week as a bit of a catch up. I’ve been thinking about what’s important to me, and being completely and totally over dramatic (thanks aunt flo) (does anyone call it that anymore?) But today has been a great day when it came down to it!

Relax

wisdom

Today sucked. Completely in the traditional “everything is out to get me” today sucks kinda way. Being currently unemployed, I’m a bit less than productive, which seems silly because I’ve got unlimited time. The boyfriend’s momma asked me if I could bake some sweet treats for their fruit shop and I happily obliged. However, I didn’t know that I would stay up late watching too many episodes of Veronica Mars, have to get up too early, burn my cookies, put too much nutmeg in my zucchini loaf and completely and totally lose my shit. I had a full on melt down over what the fuck I was doing with my life along with why couldn’t I succeed at anything and why oh why was the boyfriend being so insensitive. (He really wasn’t, I was “projecting”). Then some random numbers kept calling me which just jacked up my anxiety to an all time high and then my head started pounding and I just wanted to lay down and sleep forever. I had a good cry, cracked a bottle of red, and sat down to think. I just need to stop worrying so much – easier said than done, right?

4 Women of TV I Wish Were My Friends

1. Hannah Horvath, Girls

Hannah is neurotic, self absorbed, flaky, and probably batshit crazy. She’s so busy looking after herself or looking for “the story” that she completely ignores her friends and boyfriend and yet somehow will always be there to get you through the situation with some tough love. She’s a completely unique character because she’s always real, but not always likeable. I sound like I’m just listing her bad points, but I love her sass, her unharnessed charm, and her complete disregard for any social norms, while still managing to be just as insecure and confused as the rest of us “normal people”. Hannah, be my frenemy?

hannah horvath

2. Samantha Jones, Sex and the City

Samantha is sexy, confident, trashy and classy. She is completely pulled together but is not above giving BJs to the FedEx guy in her office. She is a woman in charge who wears what she wants, says what she wants, and fucks who she wants. She doesn’t take no for an answer and is a complete and total maneater (and woman eater, hehe) but her ladies always come first. She makes time for herself and her friends, and never ever lets a man consume her life. She’s completely larger than life in every way possible, she’s important and fucking right she knows it!

samantha jones

3. Dr. Temperance Brennan, Bones

Bones is brilliant. She doesn’t take shit from anyone and will kick your ass any day of the week. She’s a no nonsense tough cookie with an ooey gooey center. She lets herself fall in love with Booth, although she doesn’t make it easy for him. She allows herself to enjoy new experiences, while still staying completely guarded and emotionally stunted, yet completely endearing. She’s full of surprises, like her Wonder Woman costume and her way with kids. She’s completely stable and predictable in all the best ways.

temperance brennan

4. Veronica Mars, Veronica Mars

Veronica is creative, cunning, witty and charming. She’s a marshmallow. She kicks ass at what she does, has the most insane amount of ambition and always gets the hottest guys. Plus she has seriously great hair. Even when she’s rocking the early 2000s shag with cargo pants and those weird army hats she’s still a babe. She’s got her insecurities and vulnerabilities that make her relatable, while still maintaining her tough as nails persona. She’s seriously, seriously badass in the sweetest way possible.

Seared Baby Octopus with Potatoes and Heirloom Tomatoes

QUINOA

I tried my first oyster at a market by the sea in Boston. I sucked it back and felt the salty flesh hit my tongue. I gagged. I wasn’t always such a foodie, you know. Growing up in New England, my parents created 3 little anomalies. We were kings of clam chowder, comparing the contents of our sourdough bread bowls from one roadside shop to the other. We were queens of the shrimp plate, expertly sucking down the sweet pink flesh leaving nothing but a pile of discarded shells.

I fell in love with baby octopus at an all you can eat buffet. My seven year old brain raced with the seemingly endless possibilities, looking at the buffet carts full of inviting and unknown foods. I grabbed one of everything, and found myself faced with a challenge. On my plate lay a fried baby octopus, something that was a far cry from the roast chicken and hamburger helper world I lived in. Encouraged by my family – and not having to be told twice – I dove my fork into the squishy fried octopus. As I popped it into my mouth, my family waited with baited breath. I chewed, swallowed, and went back for seconds.

Seared Baby Octopus with Potatoes and Heirloom Tomatoes

  • Servings: 2
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

Ingredients

Salad
2 Potatoes, washed and diced
2 Rashers Bacon, Diced
2 Large Heirloom Tomatoes, sliced
1/2 Cup Heirloom Cherry Tomatoes
1 Cup Baby Spinach

Octopus
10 Baby Octopus, cleaned and heads removed
2 Cloves Garlic, minced
3 Tbsp Olive Oil
Salt and Pepper

Dressing
2 Cloves Garlic, minced
1 Anchovy, minced
1 Green Chili, minced
1/4 Cup Lemon Juice
1/3 Cup Olive Oil
Salt and Pepper

Method

  1. Make the dressing by combining all ingredients and seasoning to taste. Set aside.
  2. Combine all ingredients for the octopus and set aside for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Slice large tomatoes and arrange on the plate, slice and set aside cherry tomatoes.
  4. Cook potatoes in salted water until just soft. Fry diced bacon in a pan and then add potatoes to crisp.
  5. Toss cherry tomatoes, potatoes, and baby spinach in as much or as little dressing as you want.
  6. In a very hot pan, sear the baby octopus. Make sure to cook until the flesh has turned white, but be very careful because they are extremely easy to overcook. 5 mins, max!
  7. Arrange the salad and octopus on a plate however you like. Feel free to add any other seafood (like the scallop you see in the picture). This would also be good without the seafood, just as a potato salad.
